Mentoring Makes a Difference

 In Newsletter

Mentoring, at its core, guarantees young people that there is someone who cares about them, assures them they are not alone in dealing with day-to-day challenges, and makes them feel like they matter. Research confirms that quality mentoring relationships have powerful positive effects on young people in a variety of personal, academic, and professional situations. Ultimately, mentoring connects a young person to personal growth and development, and social and economic opportunity. Yet one in three young people will grow up without this critical asset.

Young Adults Who Were At-Risk for Falling Off Track But Had a Mentor Are:

  • 55% more likely to enroll in college
  • 78% more likely to volunteer regularly
  • 90% are interested in becoming a mentor
  • 130% more likely to hold leadership positions.

Mentors 4 Kids has been going strong since 2009. We provide children in need with a caring, volunteer adult role model to befriend then and spend quality time with them. The need for mentors in the six counties that we serve in southern Illinois continues to grow. The children in our program are good kids that need a friend. Someone to take them out of their home situation for time that is just about them.

At our annual mentor dinner, we asked mentors to say a few words about their mentees. They shared stories of outings they have had together and funny things they have laughed over, but mostly they conveyed the true friendship that has come from their relationship and how blessed ‘they’ have been by being a mentor. Mentees throughout the night looked at their mentors with adoration, comfort, joy. Mentors give mentees this special time to be a kid. To say it is heartwarming would be an understatement.

We are preparing for our 8th Tees 4 Kids Golf Scramble and your support and participation is needed. Over the past 5 years, we have received funding through a local foundation grant. This foundation will no longer be funding mentoring type organizations as they have restructured their strategic focus, leaving a gap of approximately $34,000.00 in our budgeted income. We need this year’s golf outing to be the biggest and the best!

Below you will find a registration form, which will provide you with the date, location and sponsor levels for our 2017 tournament. We hope you will consider joining us in our effort to sustain and grow this worthy program. Mentors 4 Kids is supported by the generosity of businesses and people in the communities we serve and takes no state or federal funding.

Because ALL kids matter!
